Creatives and the myth that they can’t be organised

Over my years as a Holistic Time Trainer, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of artists

including photographers, painters, and writers. Regardless of their medium, the principles of effective time management and organisation help to enhance their creative process and overall success. There’s this idea out there of artists being free-spirited, spontaneous, and unstructured but it’s not an absolute truth. In fact, embracing structure can enhance an artist’s productivity, creativity, and overall success. Here’s how:

Wins

Clarity and Focus: Structure provides a clear roadmap for artists, enabling them to focus on their artistic vision and goals. By establishing a routine and setting specific objectives, artists can channel their energy and creativity more effectively, avoiding distractions and maintaining a clear sense of purpose.

Productivity: Effective time management allows artists to make the most of their creative potential. By organising their time, setting deadlines, and prioritising tasks, artists can ensure that they dedicate quality time to their craft. This can result in increased output and a more consistent creative practice, leading to higher chances of success. Woo hoo!

Professionalism and Reliability: Artists who incorporate structure into their work routines demonstrate a high level of professionalism and reliability. Meeting deadlines, honouring commitments, and delivering work consistently are all essential aspects of succeeding in the art world. By being organised, artists can build a reputation as dependable professionals, which can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

Observing

Creative Blocks and Overcoming Resistance: All artists face creative blocks and resistance at some point. By having a structured approach, artists can establish habits that support their creative process. Structured practices such as daily writing exercises, regular sketching, or scheduled brainstorming sessions can help overcome creative blocks and keep the artistic flow alive.

Time for Experimentation and Reflection: Structure does not equate to rigidity or constraint. On the contrary, by managing their time effectively, artists can carve out dedicated periods for experimentation, exploration, and self-reflection. These moments of deliberate practice can be crucial for personal growth, innovation, and the development of a unique artistic style.

Balancing Art and Business: Many artists aspire to make a living from their craft, which requires a certain level of business acumen. By incorporating organisational skills into their practice, artists can manage administrative tasks, marketing efforts, and financial responsibilities more efficiently. This allows them to focus more on their artistic pursuits while maintaining a sustainable career.

Create the foundation

I hope you can see that the belief that artists cannot be successful if they are organised is a limiting and outdated stereotype. Structure and organisation provide a foundation for artists to thrive, allowing them to harness their creativity more effectively, increase productivity, and navigate the challenges of the art world. Embracing structure can be liberating and empowering, giving artists the freedom to express themselves while achieving their goals and reaching new heights of success.
