Do you make your bed?

The other day I didn’t make my bed the moment I got up like I usually do. Every so often I like to think that I could be that person who leaves their bed unmade. It’s like test tasting nonchalance.

And at first I did feel slightly rebellious… but it lasted for about 15 minutes before I caved. I kept catching sight of the bed’s ruffled and used appearance and I felt unsorted… unclean almost. Calm instantly returned the moment I tidied up and I greatly appreciated having the flat and decluttered space back.

Encouraged by my Dad, making my bed is something I’ve done from an early age. We’re the bed makers in the family; the others can do what I can’t – be rebellious 24/7! Not that I mind though, I find it very rewarding to straighten the sheets out and fluff the pillows and doona.

It doesn’t take long at all and the benefits go beyond simply tidying up my living space. Studies have shown that making your bed makes you happier because of the sense of control and calm that it offers. There’s nothing better than ticking something off before you’ve even brushed your teeth in the morning! More power to you!

On top of it all, it makes returning to my room pleasant and welcoming throughout the day. And going to bed! Well, it feels like a fresh experience every time; it’s like being hotel ready at home!

So, which camp do you fall in to? Unmade Rebel or a Calm Bed Head?

  1. Ive read somewhere that if you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day That’ll give you a small sense of pride, and it will also encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.
I just think that if you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And i you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And like you said, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is already made. Now ain’t that not one of the best simple pleasures of life.
